Brașov, Bran and Râșnov

The old town, Tâmpa, Bran Castle and the fortresses around it.

The route suits couples, families and those visiting the area for the first time. It works any month: summer and autumn are best for Tâmpa and walks, winter gives the city a fairytale feel, but watch out for ice on the road. You'll need a car for Bran, Râșnov and Prejmer. In total you'll cover about 130 km, in short routes of maximum one hour each.

Brașov is a convenient starting point: you have the old town at your feet, the mountain above it and, around it, some of the most famous fortifications in the country. In two days you can see them all without rushing. The first day is dedicated to the city and Tâmpa, the second to three places nearby: Bran, Râșnov and Prejmer. The order is planned to avoid long drives and to catch each site in good light.

Brașov's old town center and Tâmpa. Start at Piața Sfatului, which is the heart of the old town, with the Council House in the middle and colorful buildings all around. From there, walk down Strada Sforii, one of the narrowest streets in the country, and loop back through the area of the Black Church, the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul. If you want to go inside, check the visiting hours, as the schedule changes depending on the season and services. In the afternoon, head up to Tâmpa. You have two options: by cable car, in a few minutes, or on foot, on marked trails near Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu, in about an hour. At the top you'll reach the viewing platform, where you can see the entire old town and Piața Sfatului like a model. The walk down takes about 40 minutes. In the evening, stroll along Strada Republicii, with its terraces and shops, or head to Bastionul Țesătorilor, a medieval fortification preserved almost intact, at the end of a small street next to the old city wall.

Stops: Piața Sfatului, Black Church, Rope Street, Tâmpa, Weavers' Bastion.

Where to eat: Have lunch at a restaurant in the old town and try tripe soup, cabbage rolls or fried pastries. In the evening, look for a place with traditional Transylvanian cuisine, where you can find pork stew or meatball soup.

If it rains: If it rains, stay in town: visit the Black Church, go into a museum in the center, like the Casa Mureșenilor Museum, and spend time in a café in the Piața Sfatului area. Save Tâmpa for another day, as the trails get wet and the view gets lost in the clouds.

Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress and the church in Prejmer. Leave early in the morning for Bran, about 30 km from Brașov, on DN73. The castle is visible from the road, perched on a cliff, but it's better to arrive at opening time, before the large groups. The visit takes about an hour and a half, and entry is by ticket, with different hours in summer versus winter. Next to the castle is an open-air museum with peasant houses from all over the country, which you can visit if you have time. From Bran head to Râșnov, about 15 km away. The peasant fortress can be seen from a distance and you can climb on foot, along a steeper path, in about 15–20 minutes, or by minibus from the base of the hill. At the top you'll find courtyards, houses and a deep well, and from there you can see the entire Bârsa depression. In the afternoon, head down to Prejmer, about 20 km from Râșnov. The fortified church, from the 13th century, is UNESCO-protected and has a complex of refuge rooms built into the walls, inside. The visit takes about an hour. From Prejmer you return to Brașov in about 20 minutes.

Stops: Bran Castle, Bran Village Museum, Râșnov Fortress, Prejmer Fortified Church.

Where to eat: At Bran or Râșnov, look for a place with traditional food: sour soup in bread, grilled sausages or polenta with cheese and sour cream. If you arrive at Prejmer in the afternoon, grab a coffee or a simple snack in the village before heading back to Brașov.

If it rains: If it rains, Bran Castle and the church at Prejmer are fine to visit indoors, while Râșnov fortress becomes less pleasant because of the wet path. In this case, shorten your visit to Râșnov or skip it and spend more time at Bran and Prejmer, then return to Brașov for a coffee or a museum.

Check the schedule and ticket prices for Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress and the church at Prejmer before you leave; they change between seasons.

Avoid summer weekends at Bran if you can: queues form. Arrive at opening time or towards the end of the day.

In winter, the roads to Bran and Râșnov can be icy; check road conditions and use winter tires.

In Brașov, park at the edge of the center and walk; the old town is crowded and has few parking spaces.

Wear comfortable shoes: you'll be climbing at Tâmpa and Râșnov, and the old cobblestones are slippery when wet.

Do I need a car for this itinerary? For the first day, no—the city and Tâmpa can be explored on foot or by cable car. For the second day, a car is convenient; there are also buses and minibuses to Bran, but it's harder to reach Prejmer.

How long does it take to drive between Brașov, Bran, Râșnov and Prejmer? Brașov–Bran is about 30 km, Bran–Râșnov about 15 km and Râșnov–Prejmer about 20 km. Each stretch takes roughly 20–40 minutes, depending on traffic.

When is the best time to visit? Late spring, summer and autumn are best for Tâmpa and the fortresses. Winter is beautiful in the city, but the roads and paths can be slippery.

Is the itinerary suitable for children? Yes, if they're willing to walk. The cable car up Tâmpa and the rooms in the fortified church at Prejmer are usually enjoyed by older children; Râșnov has a steep climb.
