Skiing in Poiana Brașov

The slopes in Poiana and Brașov under snow.

The weekend suits couples and groups of friends who want to ski in the morning and explore the old town in the afternoon. The best months are December–March; Brașov's Christmas market usually runs in December. You only need a car if you want flexible access to the slopes; Brașov–Poiana Brașov is about 12 km and there's also a bus. Total driving is minimal, around 1–2 hours for the whole weekend.

Brașov in winter has something it doesn't have in summer: snow settled on the roofs around Piața Sfatului, white Tâmpa above the city and, just a few kilometres away, a resort where you can ski until afternoon. This weekend brings together everything worth seeing in a short span: a day on the slopes and an evening at the spa, then a morning stroll through the old centre, with the Black Church, Strada Sforii and, if it falls in season, the Christmas market.

Skiing in Poiana Brașov and an evening at the spa. Leave Brașov early in the morning, when the slopes are freshly groomed and the cable car lines are short. Poiana Brașov is about 12 km from the city, on a winding mountain road; in winter, check road conditions and bring chains or winter tires. If you'd rather not drive on snow, take the bus from town or a taxi. At Poiana Brașov you'll find slopes for all levels, from gentle terrain for beginners to more challenging runs from the top. If you don't have equipment, you can rent it right at the resort, and if it's your first time, it's worth spending an hour with an instructor before hitting the slopes. Plan a long lunch break so you don't ski tired in the afternoon, when the slopes get crowded. In the evening, head back down to Brașov or stay in the area and end the day at a spa. Choose a hotel that welcomes outside guests with a reservation, because many hotel spas have limited capacity on weekends. A warm jacuzzi and sauna after a few hours on the slopes make for the best part of the day.

Stops: Poiana Brașov.

Where to eat: For lunch, on the slope or in a cabin at Poiana, try a tripe soup or beef stew with polenta to build up strength for the afternoon. In the evening, in Brașov, look for a restaurant with Transylvanian food: bean soup in bread, grilled sausages, or fried pastries with jam and sour cream.

If it rains: If rain or fog make the slope unpleasant, move your spa time up in the schedule and spend the afternoon in central Brașov, in cafés and museums, then get back to skiing the next day if the weather clears.

Old Brașov under snow. Start your morning in Piața Sfatului, the heart of the old town, where colorful houses surround a large, open square. If you're here in season, in December, the square usually hosts the Christmas market, with wooden stalls, mulled wine, and warm pretzels. Even outside the market season, winter gives the square a peaceful air. From here, head to the Black Church, the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul, named after the fire of 1689. Step inside to see the great organ and oriental carpets hanging on the walls, then head out and take Strada Sforii, one of the narrowest streets in Europe, barely a few dozen centimeters wide. In the afternoon, climb up to the Weavers' Bastion, a medieval defensive tower with beautiful views over the city, then, if you have energy and the path isn't icy, look at Tâmpa from Piața Sfatului or take the cable car to the top. With an evening ahead, you can still make one last stop at a café before heading home.

Stops: Piața Sfatului, Black Church, Rope Street, Weavers' Bastion, Tâmpa.

Where to eat: For lunch, in a restaurant in the old center, try a meatball soup or cabbage rolls Cluj-style. If you're at the market, taste a kürtős kalács (chimney cake) or mulled wine from a wooden stall.

If it rains: If it snows or rains, focus on indoor activities: the Black Church, a museum in the center, and a long afternoon in a tea room or café around Piața Sfatului.
